Ahom Language Day is a special day on October 7m dedicated to honoring and celebrating the rich linguistic and cultural heritage of the Ahom people. It recognizes the historical significance of the Ahom language and script, while encouraging efforts to preserve, learn, and promote this important part of Assam’s heritage. The day serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of the Ahom community and the importance of protecting indigenous languages for future generations

No app, school or government can save Ahom Language if Ahom people themselves don't take actions to teach and promote Dai language
The Ahom Language Day 2025 was celebrated with great enthusiasm accompanied by a range of creative activities aimed at promoting awareness about the Ahom language and heritage.

The celebrations featured Tai-reels competition and Poster competition, for which we had around sixty and thirty submissions respectively. The most surprising thing was how we made the event successful despite lack of institutional support.

In just 30 days, we created more than 60 reels (in collaboration with around sixty individuals) and gathered millions of views on our Instagram account through Ahom Language Content.

The activities cannot be thoroughly described in one article so you can check our Google Drive for all the resources from reels to placards.

We respect the efforts people put in making these reels and placards for which reason we also offered cash prizes to whoever made the best reels and best placards. The result for the competition are as follows

The term merch here indicates either access to Ahom-Ebook and/or Ahom Language Course. In addition all winners have life-time access to LA Premium. For actual cash prizes you can see our payment receipts.

As a whole we spent more than 10,000 rupees in the event without any institutional support. And although there are many Ahom student organizations, only one of them actually helped us in organiizing Ahom Language Day in their campus, namely the Dai Ahom Society of Jagannath Barooah College, Jorhat.

Why 7th October?

Why is Ahom Language Day Celebrated on 7th October? The most simple answer to this is it's a combination of days in a week in English and Ahom respectively.

There are 7 days in a week in English.

But 10 days in a week in Ahom

And similarly there are 7 heavenly realms in Christianity there are 10 heavenly realms in Buddhism. There are 7 virtues in Christianity, but there are 10 virtues in Buddhism.

So 7th October or 7/10 thus forms an important West/East connection which makes the date very easy to remember while also being linked to Tai-Kadai symbolism. On one hand we are modern and western but we are also connected to our ancient and Asian heritage.

Prospect for ALD 2026

For the second iteration of Ahom Language Day 2026, we are relying on institutional support and organizing STAR Tai Music competition with the hope of discovering new talents as well as promoting genuine Tai music.

And last year we spent 10,000 rupees so this year we will spend the double of that i.e. 20,000 rupees.

So please share about the event to as many people as you can while there is still time for submission (last date 7th October, 2026)
