6. Ahom Adverbs

Adverbs are words that modifies or qualifies an adjective, verb, or other adverb or a word group, expressing a relation of place, time, circumstance, manner, cause, degree, etc. Adverbs in Ahom generally come after verb or in the starting or ending of a sentence

6.1 Adverb of Time

An adverb of time indicates when an action takes place, how often it occurs, or for how long it lasts.

kw tEkq$ kinq yU!
(kao têrk kin yùu)
- I am still eating


pj! dj@ kinq
(pài dāi kin)
- I haven't eaten yet

Here, still (têrk) and yet (pài) are adverbs of time that tells us for how long the person has been eating, which in this case is longer than expected.

6.2 Adverb of manner

An adverb of manner indicates how an action takes place or the manner in which it happens

mnq# lVnq@ bj# bj#
(mán lāen wái wái)
- He ran quickly


mEw@ xEnq# ba# ma dM nnq$ kinq xw@ nj$ bj$ bj$
(mēr khérn wáa maa dam nân kin khāo nâi wâi wâi)
- Last night that black dog ate this rice quickly

Here, quickly (wâi wâi) is an adverb of manner which tells us how fast the man ran or how fast the dog ate rice i.e. very quickly and additionally last night (mēr wàa) is an adverb of time that just tells us when he ate - i.e. last night.

(kin dee dee)
- Eat properly

Here, properly (dee dee) is also an adverb of manner which tells you how the subject should eat

6.3 Adverb of Place

An adverb of place indicates where an action takes place

ma pj tI@ nnq@
(maa pai tēe nān)
- The dog went there

Here, there (tēe nān) is an adverb of place which tells us where the dog went.

6.4 Adverb of Frequency

An adverb of frequency indicates how often an action takes place

kw rkq$ m]# ta! es!
(kao râk máu tàa sè)
- I love you forever

Here, forever (tàa sè) is an adverb of frequency which tells us how often the subject loves the object, which here is always.

6.5 Adverb of Degree

An adverb of time indicates the intensity of an action, adjective or another adverb

mnq# n,[q# ktq$ xVnq! na!
(mán náang kât khàen nàa)
- She is so smart


sU dI rkq$ na!
(suu dee râk nàa)
- You are so cute

Here so (nàa) is an adverb of degree which tells us how much cute or smart the subject is.
